I proposed an idea to speak at AlterConf in Portland, so I travelled domestically to speak. The event gave me a free ticket, and I was paid 200 USD to speak. The event did not pay for my travel and accommodation. My employer did not pay my travel expenses, and I took unpaid time off to speak. It took me 4 days to prepare for my 20 minutes speaking slot, and I had a great time. I'm a person who has been speaking for 0 years. This was a not for profit event. Also, As this was for a non-profit conference, I didn't expect to be paid a lot (and neither should you, if you speak at one). But everything else was well taken care of, and I felt very respected and valued as a speaker there.
