I was invited to speak at Haskell Symposium in Vancouver, so I travelled internationally to speak. The event asked me to buy a ticket at full price, and I was not paid to speak. The event assisted with part of my travel and accommodation. My employer paid all of my travel expenses, and I was a student when I spoke at the event. It took me 4 weeks to prepare for my 25 minutes speaking slot, and I had a great time. I'm a man who has been speaking for 1 year. Also, I received funding from UPenn (I'm a PhD student there) and from an ACM SIGPLAN grant, which together covered my expenses. However, I had to front all of the expense several months prior to the conference, and only received full reimbursement a month and a half afterward.
