I proposed an idea to speak at SXSW in Austin, TX, so I travelled domestically to speak. The event asked me to buy a ticket at full price, and I was not paid to speak. The event did not pay for my travel and accommodation. My employer did not pay my travel expenses, and I was working while speaking at the event. It took me 2 days to prepare for my 45 minutes speaking slot, and I had a mostly bad time. I'm a man who has been speaking for 11 years. This was a for profit event. Also, SXSW only pays for your badge. Everything else must be paid for by the speaker, and both lodging and airfare are very expensive and sell out quickly.
