I proposed an idea to speak at Visual Studio Live! in Orlando, so I travelled internationally to speak. The event gave me a free ticket, and I was paid 1300 USD to speak. The event assisted with part of my travel and accommodation. My employer did not pay my travel expenses, and I was working while speaking at the event. It took me 2 days to prepare for my 75 minutes speaking slot, and I had a mostly good time. I'm a man who has been speaking for 10 years. This was a for profit event. Also, the organisers pay a flat fee of $650 per session, and I had two sessions. They do not cover flights however, so the $1300 was supposed to cover an intercontinental flight to Orlando -- which it barely did. So, in essence, I was not paid to speak.
